Osteria di Sarto is about connecting as a community and simply being together with each other. Our purpose is to build community among parishioners and to welcome the guest and stranger to discern joining our parish.
Osteria di Sarto will be open after the 9:30 AM Mass for coffee, donuts, fellowship and more. We are sure many are wondering where we came up with the name Osteria di Sarto. Great question! So here is the background.
In Italy, an Osteria was traditionally an informal place with very low prices. Note the stem: ospitalita (hospitality). This is the bare minimum provision for a dining experience, like a food court or an inn. Osterias were actually used until the 1960’s as a place where only wine was served, and people would bring their own food. Such places peppered the countryside, feeding and housing traveling pilgrims for a night in exchange for a few coins.
Giuseppe Melchiorre Sarto, born June 2, 1835, in the farming village of Riese, Italy, near Venice, was the oldest boy in a family of nine children; his family called him “Bepi.” We know him better today as Pope Saint Pius X.
For Pope Saint Pius X gathering in fellowship was so important to him that he abolished the custom of the pope dining alone, which had been established by Pope Urban VIII, and each evening, he invited other priests, family, friends and workers in the Vatican to dine with him.
Thus, the name Osteria di Sarto.
Good ideas, suggestions and concepts are welcome with the intent of making our time together after Mass every Sunday enjoyable and meaningful for all. Osteria di Sarto is a work in progress. We invite you to join us regularly as we assemble to celebrate the Eucharist and gather to form community together at Osteria di Sarto.
